May 4, 2018        Y Maes, Llandanwg (no, that's not a mis-spelling, it's Welsh!)

One of the locals recommended we head 1.5 miles south of town to a another access point for the beach.  Where as the beach in Harlech is sandy, this beach has more rocks and tide pools to explore.

Nestled in the sand dunes is an old church, St. Tangwg's.  "St. Tanwg is the patron saint of Llandanwg, Gwynedd, Wales.  He is presumed to be the founder of St. Tanwg's Church, although the presence of two inscribed stones which have been dated from the 5th century, suggest the church was already in existence when Tanwg and his brothers arrived in the area early in the 6th century.  The stones are inscribed with an unusual formula, used in the 4th century in Italy and Gaul.  The church building is medieval, probably dating from the 13th century."

We were able to take a peek in it right before an elderly gentleman was closing it for the day.

A tombstone in the area around the church dating 1600.

The inside of  St. Tangwg's Church.

A Celtic cross thought to be 9th century.  The left "arm" of the cross is broken off.

The front of the church.

I'm unclear what this stone is.....I can't even find the word on Google, but it dates from the 5th century.

The Ingenvus stone.

A colorful snail.

Some type of mussel attached to the stones.  They only had the one shell, not two like a clam.

The beach.

I love the way the gang thinks up fun things to do everywhere we go!  The object is to see how close the water comes to their feet.    https://youtu.be/HrR9F0oAQxE
