Today we dipped our toes in the Mediterranean Sea!!  It was freezing, but clean.  I expected an odor of fish, but there was none.  The sand is more course than Lake Michigan's and darker in color.  We combed the beach and found shells, rocks and a bit of sea glass.  Maria VanHoeven, I have a piece to add to your collection!  Now you will have sea glass from the Mediterranean!  We also toured a watchtower that was built in the 1760's.  The towers line the coast and if pirates or contraband are sighted, they light a fire on top of the tower which in turn, tells the other towers to light theirs.  Think of the beginning of Mulan on the Great Wall of China.  Lunch was at a restaurant with lots of fish as you would expect in a coastal town.  Boy, do they take a long time to bring the check in Europe!  The high temperature for today was 64 degrees.

Fried cod, no tartar sauce :(

More fish.  It was good!

Watchtower built in the 1760's

Inside the watchtower.  Living quarters for the men.  Average of 4-8 in residence.

Tiny door that accessed the top of the tower.

Originally, the only way into the tower was to climb a rope ladder to a large window 20 feet off the ground.

The large window through which the soldiers climbed into the tower.

The history of the tower.

The original way into the watchtower 20 feet up.  Remnants of the rope ladder.  It looked pretty dry rotted!

Stairs from the living quarters level to the roof.
